SME loan demand jumps as businesses plan for uncertainty

Fresh September quarter data points to more borrowing, but not every application is clearing lender checks

SME loan demand jumps as businesses plan for uncertainty?w=400

Australian SME borrowing has taken a sharper turn upwards, with new September quarter reporting from Inside Small Business showing Banjo Loans recorded its strongest SME lending quarter since its barometer began in 2023.
For business owners, the message is not simply that confidence has returned; it is that many firms appear to be treating finance as a buffer against still-uncertain trading conditions.

The figures point to a clear change from the more defensive mood seen earlier in the year. Loan application volumes rose 27 per cent quarter on quarter, from 696 to 881, while loans drawn increased 31 per cent and funded loan numbers were up by nearly 15 per cent. Construction was the most active sector, with retail trade, healthcare and professional services also showing stronger lending activity.

That matters because borrowing for resilience can look different from borrowing for expansion. A business may seek funding to preserve working capital, manage supplier timing, cover seasonal stock needs or maintain optionality if customer demand shifts. Even when loan demand is rising, owners still need to test whether the proposed debt improves flexibility or merely delays a cash flow problem. Educational tools such as a Business Loan Repayment Calculator can help illustrate how changes in rate assumptions, term length and loan size may affect estimated repayments.

The stronger result should also be read with caution. The barometer reflects Banjo’s own lending activity, not the whole Australian SME finance market. A rise in applications may partly reflect product changes, borrower behaviour or greater awareness of non-bank options, rather than a uniform lift across all lenders. Still, the data is useful because it highlights where demand is coming from and why some businesses are still being declined.

Serviceability concerns, eligibility criteria and taxation-related issues were identified as the main reasons applications were not approved as more businesses sought finance. These are practical warning signs for SMEs reviewing their options. Before considering any new facility, it is worth understanding the basics of How Do Lenders Assess a Business Loan Application in Australia?, including cash flow, existing commitments, repayment capacity, credit history and the quality of supporting records.

The broader takeaway is that stronger borrowing demand does not remove the need for discipline. Businesses considering finance generally benefit from up-to-date accounts, realistic forecasts, clear loan purpose and a view of how repayments would be handled if revenue softens. In a market where lenders remain alert to risk, preparation can matter as much as appetite for growth.
