What the Latest RBA Hold Means for Car Loan Shoppers

Borrowers may have more certainty, but finance costs still need a close look

Australian borrowers have been given a little more certainty after the Reserve Bank of Australia left the cash rate unchanged at 4.35%, shifting attention from further rate rises to how long higher borrowing costs may remain in place.
For anyone planning to finance a new car, used vehicle, ute or business vehicle, the decision is welcome, but it is not the same as relief.

A cash rate hold does not automatically mean car loan rates will fall. Lenders price vehicle finance using a mix of funding costs, competition, credit risk, loan term, vehicle type and whether the loan is secured. That means two borrowers looking at similar cars can still receive very different offers, especially if one has a stronger credit profile, a larger deposit or more stable income documentation.

The most immediate impact is on budgeting. Buyers who delayed a purchase because of uncertainty may feel more confident returning to the market, but repayments are still elevated compared with the ultra-low-rate period many Australians remember. Before committing, it is worth modelling repayments across different loan terms, deposit amounts and interest rate assumptions. A longer term may look easier month to month, yet it can increase the total interest paid over the life of the loan.

For personal car buyers, the key question is affordability after all running costs are included. Registration, insurance, servicing, tyres, fuel or charging, and possible roadside assistance can change the real monthly cost of ownership. For commercial car loan applicants, the decision may also involve cash flow, tax timing, vehicle use and whether a ute, van or SUV is being purchased primarily for business purposes.

Self-employed borrowers and applicants with imperfect credit should also avoid assuming that a stable cash rate guarantees easier approval. Lenders are still assessing bank statements, income consistency, existing debts and recent repayment conduct. In some cases, specialist or non-bank lenders may be more flexible, but flexibility can come with different fees, rates or conditions.

The practical consideration for buyers is to compare the whole loan, not just the advertised rate. Look at the comparison rate, establishment fees, monthly fees, early payout rules, balloon payments and whether extra repayments are allowed. If a dealer finance offer appears convenient, it should still be weighed against outside options before signing.

With rates on hold, the market may feel steadier, but smart preparation remains essential. Checking eligibility early, gathering documents and taking time to compare finance options can help borrowers move faster when the right vehicle appears, without rushing into a loan that costs more than expected.

A More Selective Caravan Market Could Help Prepared Buyers

Recent caravan industry reporting suggests Australia's RV market is moving into a more selective phase, with buyers taking longer to decide, comparing layouts more carefully and looking harder at total ownership costs before committing. That does not mean demand for caravanning has disappeared. Rather, it points to a market where households are more cautious, dealers are working harder to convert enquiries, and value is being judged beyond the headline price. - read more
